If you’re applying for a visa, a business loan, or any official transaction that requires financial proof, you may be asked to provide a Certified True Copy of your Income Tax Return (ITR). But how do freelancers in the Philippines get one?
Here’s everything you need to know to prepare and request it smoothly.
What Is a Certified True Copy of an ITR?
A Certified True Copy is an official duplicate of your original ITR, stamped and validated by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR). It serves as proof that your tax return was legally filed and accepted.
Who Needs a Certified True Copy of Their ITR?
Not everyone needs it. Usually, it’s requested by:
- Embassies or consulates (for visa applications)
- Banks or lending institutions (for loans)
- Government agencies (for certain permits or licenses)
Unless a third party specifically asks for it, you don’t need to request one.
📌 5 Requirements to Get a Certified True Copy of Your ITR
If it’s required, here’s what you need to prepare:
1️⃣ Request Letter
Prepare a signed request letter addressed to your assigned BIR Revenue District Office (RDO). Not sure which RDO you’re registered under? You can find it by checking your past BIR emails or visiting the BIR website.
2️⃣ Original Complete ITR Copy
Bring the original copy of your filed ITR, including all pages. If you’re under the 8% income tax rate, this usually refers to Form 1701A (2 pages).
3️⃣ Complete ITR Set for Certification
For each certified copy you need, print a full set that includes:
- Filed ITR form (e.g., Form 1701A)
- Tax Return Receipt Confirmation
- Payment reference (if applicable)
Note: If you’re requesting multiple certified sets, you must print each one completely.
4️⃣ ₱100 Certification Fee per Set
Pay this using BIR Form 0605. Indicate the fee as “Certification Fee” in the form.
5️⃣ ₱30 Documentary Stamp Tax
This is paid for each set and will be attached to the certified copy. Make sure to include this in your total payment.
Additional Tips Before You Go
- Double-check your RDO’s specific process. Some may require additional documents or set appointments.
- Processing times may vary, so allow at least a few business days before your deadline.
- Bring extra copies and IDs just in case—they might ask for them.
- If you’re unsure, you can also call or email your RDO for clarification.
✅ Take Action: Don’t Miss Out on a Required Document
Getting a Certified True Copy of your Annual ITR isn’t a routine task, but when the time comes, it’s crucial to do it right. Prepare the right documents, follow the BIR’s steps, and don’t delay especially if it’s part of a time-sensitive application.
